Savour Kilkenny

Events

Who is speaking in those 20 sessions?
That is where the fun starts – you are, if you want! This is not a conference so the organisers (that's us) arrange the day and venue and then wait to see what happens.
Seriously – if you want to talk and share then put yourself forward. For some of you that will be something you are are experienced in, for others you will not be.
You can do a pres entation, you can sit down and tell a story, you can doodle on a whiteboard. This is about genuine and authentic conversations and sharing – tools and slickness do not matter.

Only One Rule
You don't sell during your talk. Yourself, your business, your product.
Life is too short to be listening to sales pitches. So your talk at foodcamp can be based on things like:
•         skill sets which a speaker will share
•         experiences that are relevant for others to hear about
•         lessons learned that will help the audience to avoid similar ones

Kinda scary – has this been done before?
This came out of the idea of barcamps which were run by people in the technology space in the USA. It spread to Ireland 4 years ago and over 20 really successful and fun camps of various kinds have been run around Ireland. People who come to them love them.

There has never been a foodcamp in Ireland – this is the first. And even globally they are just starting to be held – a couple we have found include:

VinoCamp Paris – July 10th 2010

VinoCamp and CheeseCamps in Vancouver

FoodCamp Italy - Sept 13th 2008

Anything else I need to know?
Lunch. Because this is all about edibles and because food passionists love sharing we wanted to capture the spirit of a community picnic. So we are asking attendees (if at all possible) to bring a lunchbox. Or 2. Or a dish of some kind to be shared.

We have allowed an hour and a half for lunch so people can relax and enjoy the variety of food which we are sure will be there.
Practically speaking there will be no heating facilities so whatever you bring needs to be edible cold.

And after lunch – a panel discussion
This is the one chance during the day to join everyone and listen to or participate in a lively discussion on "Digging Ireland out of the recession - Artisan produce, Food  Innovation and Guerrilla Marketing"

Taking part at the top table, and being lead by John McKenna will be:

    Dr Susan Steele, BIM
    Helen Finnegan, Knockdrinna Cheese
    Una Fitzgibbon, Bord Bia
    Margaret Jeffares, Good Food Ireland
Paul McCarthy, Teagasc (and Higher Ground)
Rozanne Stevens, Chef and Pat Kenny Show (website)

New WIT research facility announced

Events

Waterford Institute of Technology is to begin building a new integrated research facility with work to commence in January of next year.  Plans for the project were outlined the Institutes’s Director, Prof Kieran R. Byrne who was addressing graduates and members at the 2008 conferring ceremonies. Prof Byrne said the new centre at the West Campus in Carriganore would play a vital role in the further development of the south east as a key ICT (information and communications technology) hub.

“It is specifically designed in anticipation of an extended research future for the Institute. It will be linked to the current ArcLabs facility which houses our unique Telecommunication and Software Systems Group (TSSG). This research group is the largest of its kind in Europe. It employs 140 people and has been instrumental in developing patents and establishing spin out companies.”

The new series of The ArcLabs Innovation Workshops was launched yesterday and is already getting some attention.

The series kicks off on September 25 with a 1-day session on Intellectual Property and Licensing. This workshop is run by one of our client companies, Stratagem Innovation, who provide a range of training programmes in the areas IP and innovation management and whose clients include leading Irish businesses, third-level Institutes and Enterprise Ireland. This workshop will be delivered Dr. John McManus, a highly experienced trainer, educator and consultant with a wealth of expertise in intellectual property management and commercialisation. John is part of the NovaUCD team and his bio is in the attached course brochure.

Next up in the series is Internet Marketing on October 22. I’m looking forward to having Damien Mulley back again to run this session with his unique style and approach.

In November, the team from the Centre for Design Innovation will be back with us, this time to deliver a workshop on Designing Services. If for some reason you think your company is not in the service business, this workshop will make you think again. The Centre’s programmes and research are focused on user-centred design and branding and on helping organisations to create value for their users through design thinking. Expect the unexpected in this workshop!
The December workshop (date to be announced) will be on Investment Readiness. Early-stage and more mature companies will meet with entrepreneurs who have been through the process of successfully raising investment finance for their companies and will share their insights into this crucial aspect of growing a business.

On January 28, the ubiquitous Damien Mulley returns with a workshop on Business Blogging. Damien is probably Ireland’s best known blogger and his commentary and news aggregation covers technology, politics and food. He is also the organiser of both the Irish Web and Blog Awards.

By the way, we don’t use the term “workshop” lightly. These sessions are both challenging and informative. They are all about learning-by-doing, about engaging in the conversation - and about having fun along the way. Brochures and application forms for each workshop will posted about a month in advance.
